Navigating in eClass Grades
As you become more familiar with using eClass Grades, you will discover keyboard shortcuts and other ways to help you save time.
Moving Between Cells
A cell is the small rectangle that contains an input field for a particular student or assignment. The active cell is either highlighted or surrounded by a thick rectangle, and is the cell into which you type information.
- Click a cell, then press Tab to move right and Shift+Tab to move left.
- Press the arrow keys to move up, down, left, or right.
Moving Between Windows
You can switch between different windows in the following ways:
- From the Windows menu, choose Scores, Students, Assignments, Summary, or Seating.
- Use the keyboard shortcuts: z+1 for Scores, z+2 for Students, z+3 for Assignments, z+4 for Summary, and z+5 for Seating.
- In the Scores window, double-click a student name to go to that row in the Students window.
- In the Scores window, double-click an assignment column number to go to that assignment row in the Assignments window.
Closing a Window
From the Windows menu, select Close Window. The top window closes. If you close the last window of a class, and you have made changes, you are asked if you want to save the changes.
Closing all the windows is different from quitting the application. You can close all the windows without quitting the application.
Jumping in the Scores Window
The Jump To command in the Utilities menu enables you to jump around in the Scores window as quickly as possible, such as when you enter scores into eClass Grades from a non-alphabetized stack of papers.
The default choice, jumping by Student Initials, is a very useful means of moving quickly from one student to another.
To Jump to a cell:
- Click in the assignment column of the Scores window for which you want to enter scores.
- Press z+J, or select Jump To from the Utilities menu.
- Type the initials of the student, in first name last name format.
- Click Enter, and you are in that cell.
- Type the score, press z+J again, and continue to the next student's score.
The first initial is defined as the first character after the comma, excluding spaces. The last initial is defined as the first character that appears in a student's name.
For example, to jump to a student named Young, Edward, type EY. The initials for Beethoven, Ludwig von are LB, not BL.
If students have the same initials, you jump to the student that appears first alphabetically.
You can also choose to jump up and down a column of scores using:
- Student Number
- Student Row Number
- the first three characters of the Misc. 1, Misc. 2, or Misc. 3 columns of the Students window
- Assignment Column Number
